The Greek word for “crown” is stephanos, which can refer to a badge of royalty, a prize, or a general symbol of honor. The term originated in the ancient Greek Games, where a stephanos was a wreath or garland of leaves placed on the winner’s head at the Bema, an elevated seat occupied by the awarding official. The Apostles used bema to depict the scene where faithful believers stand before Christ and have their deeds judged. Our faithfulness, overcoming, sacrifice, suffering, and enduring will all be rewarded there.
